Detailed instructions:

The main library at MCC categorizes the books on its shelves using the Library of Congress Classification System.  You can search for them using the KCTCS Library Catalog.  The KCTCS Library Catalog is a website showing a listing of books (and other materials) located in the library.  You can search this catalog to find out which books the library has on a subject, or which books the library has that have been written by a particular author, or if the library has a particular title that you are looking for.

Searching the KCTCS Library Catalog

To search for books in the KCTCS Library Catalog, first you have to decide what kind of search you are going to do.

There are several different ways you can search in the KCTCS Library Catalog.  The first is by keyword.  A keyword search means that it will try to find your keyword(s) anywhere in the catalog.  For example, if you type the keyword "brown," it will look for any books that have the word "brown" in the title, and/or any books that have been written by an author whose last name is "Brown," and/or any books that are about the color brown (which would be the book's subject).

Usually a keyword search is the most flexible way to search, since it searches through all the information about every single book.  Unless you change this setting, this is how the KCTCS Library Catalog will search.  To change this setting, click on the top drop-down box next to the search box and choose a different option.

Some other ways to search include searching only for the author's name, searching only for the title of the book, or by searching for a subject heading.

Once you've decided how you would like to do your search, you have to decide which community college you want to search at.  The KCTCS Library Catalog is shared between 16 community college in Kentucky, so it will search all those colleges' library collections unless you tell it to only search at one of the colleges.

There is a drop-down box about halfway down the screen that says "All KCTCS Libraries."  To limit your search so you are only looking for books at Madisonville Community College, click on this box and select "Madisonville CC" from the list.

When you click on the title of one of the books on your list, you will be taken to a separate page that tells you information about that book.  This is called the book's record

A record is a computerized grouping of information about a book.  A book's record shows you important information about the book: the title, author, publisher, publication date, publication city, and several other things as well.

Below that information is the holdings information.  This is the part of the record that shows you which colleges own that book, and where it is located in each of those libraries.  Make sure you scroll down to Madisonville CC on this list.  You will find the book's location, which tells you which section of the library the book is located in, and the call number, which tells you where the book is physically located within the library.  The call number is kind of like your street address.  Just like your street address tells you where your house is located on your street, the call number tells you where the book is located on the shelves.

The last thing you need to pay attention to is the book's status, which tells you if the book is checked out or not.  You can find this below the call number.

If you need help finding books, please contact the library.
